OUR HISTORY
The School was established on the 9th of January, 1995 by Mrs Margaret Iyabo Durand and Dr Mrs Titilola Ekua Abudu who are both Co-founders of the school. Mrs M.I. Durand was the Principal for many years before she took in the role of Directress. She was a hard working disciplinarian with decades of teaching experience. She served on the Board of several other Schools and can boast that many of her students have become notable personalities in Nigeria. Dr. Mrs Titilola Ekua Abudu is a Lawyer, Chartered Administrator and Educationist who is serving as Administrator of the School and was in the past: President of the International Women’s Society (IWS), President of AISEN (Association of International School Educator In Nigeria) which strive to make the education in Nigeria to match global standards. She is currently the Global Vice President of OB-PS (Olave Baden Powell Society) which sponsors 10 million Girls’ Guides all over the world.
The School started with some core staff including our music Director Rev William Allotey Pappoe and a few others teacher as well 24 pupils at No. 8 Omo-Osagie Street, Southwest, Ikoyi, Lagos. By 1998 the school had grown and had to take up another building to accommodate the children. Within a relatively short period of about 10yrs, the school grew to its maximum capacity of 650 children and has maintained a good number ever since. In September 2001 the school moved to its purpose built permanent premises, located at 1 Greenwood House School Road, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos which was built with spacious classrooms, better facilities and expansive playgrounds.
Greenwood House School is a favourite choice for children. We pride ourselves on creating a close, secure and happy environment. Being forward thinking, we are the pioneer school in Nigeria to adopt the School Angel security system which informs parents about the movement of children at the beginning and close of school.
It is a testimony that all our school events through the year are inundated with old students who keep coming back years after they have graduated to join us for Sports Days, Fun Days, World Book Days and School plays, amongst others, and for visits to the School Shop. The Greenwood child knows how to work hard and play hard, and is confident and lively. At Greenwood, learning and a deep sense of value and mutual respect are fundamental to our community life. Our vision of “Building Lives to Fulfill Purpose” makes us conscious of promoting personal development in and outside the class.
With every little staff turnover and the core members of staff having started with the opening of the school, there is a sense of stability and tradition. Every class boasts of two highly qualified teachers. Greenwood prides itself in its motivational teaching style as it combines traditional methods with the use of new technologies. Our highly qualified and dedicated teachers encourage our pupils to develop confidence and skills by building a rapport with them. All pupils are given homework and parents are encouraged to take an active part in their child’s learning. We organize open days for parents to meet with staff over the course of the school year, creating an avenue for the parents to discuss school matters and to check on the progress of their children.
The students are taught in purpose-built classrooms, each with its own interactive whiteboard. The lessons are full of activity within an atmosphere that is warm, caring and conducive for learning. The curriculum combines the best of the British and Nigerian curriculum. Science is an important subject for the pupils and it is taught in our modern and well-equipped laboratory. Our modern computer suite caters for all their cyber needs and the woodland themed library is a sanctuary for many of the children.
Throughout the years Greenwood house school has stood by its mission statement.
“To Work Together With Parents to Reach The Full Potential Of Their Wards Educationally, Morally, And socially – In A More Conducive Environment” and has been providing this service of excellence to students that have not only excelled academically but have gone on to become great ambassadors of the school and upwardly mobile members of the societies they find themselves in.
Greenwood House School Principal ensures that her teachers work as a team to imbibe values, foster self-discipline, and sense of belonging and resilience in all the pupils especially students in the senior year groups. The school is known for nurturing positive attitudes, great values to hard work and discipline required to achieve and sustain excellence – in the classroom, on the playground, to excel in future endeavours.
We are very keen on making our pupils well grounded academically and socially thereby making them adapt easily wherever they find themselves. The confidence we imbibe in them gives them the drive to participate in various competitions and we modestly say we are always on the winning side
